Physical and Chemical Changes

Did you know that the first week of November is a Chemistry Week? November teachable moments have enlightened me. I guess it’s because Marie Curie was born on November 7. I read her biography about 100 times when I was a teenager hoping to win a Nobel Prize in chemistry one day, but I digress. I really wanted to do something with Anna to celebrate a Chemistry Week, but only on Sunday I was finally able to gather my energies to do something. First we watched a couple of movies on BrainPop Jr on States of Matter and Physical and Chemical Changes. I am trying out membership this week, and Anna absolutely loves the movies and the quizzes that come with them. The movie pointed out cooking as a prime example of a chemical change. I had a different idea in mind – making a playdoh.

We made playdoh (using a recipe from Superheroes and Princesses) before, and Anna’s favorite part is adding food coloring. She is in a Christmas mood already and was wanting to build a Christmas scene with her playdoh. Perhaps it was because papa was experimenting with building a Christmas village out of cardstock at the same time. I can’t believe that Christmas is practically around the corner!
