In addition to celebrating a Picture Book Month with suggested topics, we are reading a lot of Thanksgiving books this time of the year. One interesting book that was new to us is Thelonius Turkey Lives! The story line is a bit quirky, but the illustrations are very fun. I won’t give away the whole plot, but there is a mention of fashionable hats with feathers in the book. So this year instead of obligatory “handprint turkey” craft, I suggested to make turkey hats – an idea that Anna accepted quite enthusiastically despite being somewhat under weather.
We used paper soup bowls for the hats and painted the outside. Anna put so much paint on hers that it took about 2 hours to dry out, so she quickly volunteered to decorate the hat that I painted.
She made a turkey tail out of a fabric maple leaf and stuck a lot of feathers on it.
Of course turkey needed a face. Luckily, we had a big collection of buttons to choose from. A lot of those buttons went to the second hat (I forgot to photograph it)
And here is a fashion model – all ready for a turkey hat show.
