Making Moon Sand was on my Summer Bucket list. I used the recipe from here. Alas, none of us was too thrilled with the result. I expected the mixture to be more like a wet beach sand. Instead we ended up with the sand “oobleck” that was first too oozy and then too hard. Also, somehow I got cornstarch all over myself mixing and playing with it. Good thing that I didn’t add food 
coloring – at least the mess was not too permanent. I was quite relieved when Anna asked for a playdoh instead and spent another 2 hours contentedly making cupcakes. Oh well, I can permanently take the moon sand off the list of things to make unless someone offers a better recipe.
On the positive note, we made another “check” in our Summer Bucket List. We found a great brand-new kite at the garage sale for $3, and then papa taught us how to fly it. The wind was not cooperating too well, but we did manage to get it up high once. Unlike moon sand, this is something I want to do again and again, and Anna agrees with me.

We haven't tried moon sand - so you're one up on us :) And, I only ever think to pull the kites out on windless days.
I actually saw some used moon sand recently. I thought about picking it up. Glad I passed! Maybe I'll just buy a bag of actual sand :). Sorry it didnt work out for you, though!
Ugg, that doesn't sound like a fun experience. Glad Anna saved you by requesting play dough :). Little J recieved moon sand once and I was glad when it left the house too.

I haven't found a moon sand recipe that look good to me. And I've started using washable paint instead of food coloring in things like this, so there is less concern about staining.
The kite looks like a lot of fun - love the picture!
That reminds me I need to take the kite down to the park and fly it!
We have never made our own moon sand, but we have tried the store bought variety. I am not a fan of that stuff - it gets everywhere and isn't easy to clean up. I don't even like to use it outside because it doesn't wash away. One summer we had purple moon sand in our grass for months.
I never have much luck with the kite, unfortunately. Maybe this year!
We love flying kites too. But, dang it about the moon sand! I was hoping that would work for y'all. It's something I've been wanting to try here.

Have to agree with the masses, not a fan of moon sand at all! Kites get a big YAY from me!

Playdough to the rescue! One more thing crossed off your summer bucket list, but it is a shame that it wasn't a hit.
Oh, I so want to fly a kite! But I can't find an open enough space to do it. It's very "foresty" (is that a word) where we live. I guess we could probably find a park somewhere without too many trees.

I wrote such a long comment and then it disappeared. Computers! My kids loved the moon sand, especially when it was oobleck like, but letting it dry in the sun a bit turned it into more like sandcastle type wet sand like you said. They still loved it and played hours in it for days. I'm sorry it was a negative experience for you.
