Planting the Wild Garden

Good folks from Blue Slip Media have sent us a great book to review – Planting the Wild Garden by Kathrin O. Galbraith. I was excited to receive it, since it was perfect for a nice garden-friendly weather that we have here lately. Anna and I quite enjoyed the story that focuses on different ways the seeds travel around, but we also appreciated the illustrations by Wendy Halperin. I called Anna’s attention to how some pages are divided into section and different details are shown in each section. I proposed to her to draw her own “quilt drawing” with crayons and then fill the background with watercolors. I was hoping for keeping the theme to the garden details, but she quickly informed me that she wants to draw what she wants to draw, which ended up to be “a tree, a flower, a pancake, a building, a portrait of two people walking and another flower”. Anna also learned a couple of things – it doesn’t work too well to select a background that is pretty much the same color as the foreground, and that the colors of the pen bleed into the watercolor paint. She also figured out that our own dry seeds from an acacia plant in the garden will make perfect feed for her plastic animals (and maybe they will get to grow in a new place as a result)
