My daughter is often stumped while presented with a blank sheet of paper, but she enjoys activities where she has to add her own creative touch to partially completed scenes or drawings. When Scholastic Express had Dollar Deals days, I downloaded for $1 a great book – Little Kids Draw. It has about a dozen different doodle pages before proceeding to “step-by-step” drawing
instructions. Both Anna and I had fun drawing a picture from this book. Interestingly, both of us independently chose to make an ailen. After Anna’s alien spent a few days on our display board, I convinced her to put it in a journal. I was inspired by Debbie at Children Grow, Children Explore, Children Learn to resurrect journal writing with Anna, and she was quite open to this idea once she realized that she won’t be required to do any actual writing. So here is her alien story, which she told me while racing around in a garden:
Once upon a time a boy named Fred was outside drawing. Suddenly he saw an alien, and an alien was moaning, “I am sick”. Suddenly an alien threw up. Fred wiped him up and said, “My name is Fred.” “My name is a Sicky Alien,” answered an alien, “because I get sick so often”. Suddenly an alien’s hair turned purple and he got rainbow stripes all over his body. “I need my mama and papa!” cried an alien. “They will take me to the doctor. But accidentally I ended up on Earth.” “That’s OK,” said Fred. He took some magic plants, mixed them with water, said some magic words and put them (I suppose plants, not words) in the bottle. Fred said, “Whenev
er you take a drink of this medicine, you will feel better.” They went to Fred’s home and an alien had water and wine for supper, and then Fred sent an alien home. “Where have you been for so long?” asked an alien’s mother. “We need to take you to the doctor”. But an alien said, “A kind boy from Earth already gave me special medicine. Now I am not going to be sick so often.” And his parents gave him a new name – Not-so-often-sick-alien-hero.
The story mostly just poured from Anna, I actually needed to stop her a couple of times to be able to write it all down. Then I reread it to her and she corrected a few places. I like that it has a beginning, a middle and an end even though I had to prompt her to wrap up a story by telling her that I am running out of space on the page.

I always love Anna's stories. C loves doodle books like that. I have to do some storytelling activities around here.
It's a great story! It's amazing what comes out of their little minds :)
Super creative job :) I LOVE children's imaginations!!
Kids' stories are the best!
I love it!
What a great story! I love that "the alien's hair turned purple and he got rainbow stripes". Wow. Making up stories is so fun, I don't do this enough with my little one. This was encouragement!
What a fantastic story! Her drawing is great, too! I love that the earth child cured the alien from being sick all the time.
"Mommy why is there a blue hat on her hair?"
I love her story. This really has me thinking of how I can do that too.
Oh how sweet!! Thanks for the journal suggestion - I have been meaning to start this with my eldest for a while now, and this is just what I needed to get me going!! I am visiting via We Play - please pop in and say hello sometime at Joyful Mama's Place - would love to see you there!
She always comes up with such creative stories, and I love that you transcribed everything for her! Great idea!!
A journal containing Anna's drawings and imaginative stories is going to make a wonderful book and keepsake.
It's very sweet that you have a record of the story as Anna told it. Don't you just love how a four year old can keep a story going and all sorts of sceanrios spring to mind to include in their stories.
My son can find a blank page quite daunting too! The doodle pages sound perfect to encourage that bit of creativity! Love it!
And your story telling and journal is simply wonderful!!!
Thanks, as always for linking up over at Red Ted Art :-)

I love her story. Thank you for the link back. It is so fun to journal our children's little stories. I know Selena will always cherish her first attempts at journaling.
What a GREAT memory you got written down! Oh, the days I look forward to. Henry's stories are elaborating more and more, but nothing compared to this. This is incredible! All from a drawing.
Thanks for linking up to It's Playtime this week, I hope to see more of your ideas next Thursday too!
Jamie @ hands on : as we grow
Transcribing our children's stories, sayings and adventures is such a valuable way of recording their learning and the history they are creating :)
Thank you once again for being part of We Play xx
I was talking with B's teacher this week about how a blank page can be daunting. She agreed that giving kids a little help to get started writing or drawing can be all they need for them to fly. Lovely to see you at the Play Academy again.
