It’s hard to get excited about fall topics when the temperature is staying in upper 90s and the pool is still conveniently open. We are taking advantage of our September heat wave when we can. But yesterday Anna was tired after school and not in the mood for the pool, so we proceeded with the planned topic of this week – apples. Anna knows fairly well that apples grow from apple seeds, and we
decided to try and grow an apple out of apple seeds. But first we had to decide which apple to grow, so we had a taste test. Our contestants were red delicious, granny smith, and fuji. We whipped up a delicious cream cheese apple dip and proceeded to taste every apple with and without a dip. Fuji was a winner for our taste test for both of us – we agreed that it was both the sweetest
and the juiciest. We reviewed the instructions on how to grow an apple from an apple seed on the computer and completed the first step. As the “bonus experiment”, we did a sink/float test on one apple we had left. As I expected, Anna predicted that the apple will sink. She was quite surprised to see it float. When my husband came home, Anna was able to retell him all instructions on growing apples almost word by word despite reading them with me only once. I am curious to see if our apple seeds will sprout – I have two black thumbs, so I am not holding my hopes too high.

We generally stick the seeds straight from the apple into the dirt. And, we plant a lot - so at least a few sprout - it's keeping them alive after that, that's the tricky part :)
I have two black thumbs too. Good luck!
It doesn't feel much like fall here either because it's in the 80s all this week.
I love Fuji apples.
What a great experiment - I hope you do get a little apple tree growing, and manage to keep it alive!
I will be looking forward to seeing if your apple seeds sprout.
You're in a heat wave, and we are having very muggy warm rain. Strange for here.
oh neat :) I was thinking on taste testing apples too to see our favourites but never thought of sprouting our own seeds, good idea will have to try this out :)
Fun! We love apples, and I'm hoping we can plant an apple tree soon too. ((fingers crossed)) Thanks for the link to the instructions!
Ours didn't grow last year but I didn't do the best at watering and such
Our favorite is honeycrisp
we've never tried apples - we've sprouted an avocado, and now it's a 4 foot plant in our bathroom!
It is finally cooling down just a bit here. I am so hoping Fall will come and stay!
I love that dip y'all made, I looked at the link for it in this post. Fuji apples are my favorite too. The kids like Gala best.
