Mr Seahorse is one of our most favorite books by Eric Carle. We took it from the library multiple times and enjoyed both the story and the illustrations. Since Anna’s Dad works from home and takes care of her most of the time, she was fascinated with the story of dedicated fathers in the animal world. When we read the book for the first time, a lot of information was new for me too. We took this book out again this week, since we were visiting Monterey Bay Aquarium which has a great exhibit right now called The Secret Lives of Seahorses.
Anna said that Seahorses was her favorite part of the aquarium – probably because there wasn’t as many buttons to push and levers to pull, which forced her to concentrate on actual animals. It is really a fascinating exhibit – I wish we could spend more time there that attention span of a three year old allowed us. We saw some of the seahorse relatives too which are even more exotic looking. When we came home, I pulled out
seahorse stickers that I bought last year, and Anna made a collage. She used sticky back felt for seaweed, corrugated cardboard for coral and stuck seahorses around. She kept playing with her collage the next day moving seahorses around and eventually moved them all out to smaller “aquariums” (notepad pieces with some felt seaweed).

That is one of our favorite Eric Carle books too.
What a wonderful project!! I will have to remember it when we visit our local aquarium.
Thank you for linking up to stART :0)
I like all the use of textures in your aquarium.
I think that is one of the few Eric Carle books I haven't read.
So, going to the Monterey Bay aquarium is one of my fondest memories, I don't know what I loved about it. I mainly remember their exhibit on tide pools, and thinking it was the coolest thing.
I agree with Anna, I have always found seahorses fascinating. I will have to look for this book. Love her craft too!
This book is a gem. I especially love the layered pages. Seahorses are fascinating creatures. When we visited Shedd Aquarium a few weeks back we couldn't even get close to the tank because so many people wanted to see the little exhibit.
We've read a lot of Eric Carle books, but never that one. I just got back from the library, lol. But I'll look for it in the catalog and reserve it.
I love that book, too. I'm showing my age because I remember with the MB Aquar. opened when I was a kid. I always thought it amusing that the NY Aquarium had Pacific Ocean marine life like otters and walruses on exhibit. The MB Aquarium was always one of my favorite places to visit.
I think we'll need to find this book - James would love it! Anna's collage sounds lovely and as thought it's the perfect accompaniment to the book.
I also really like that book! I took the kids to an aquarium on our road trip on a very rainy day. It was PACKED, and the kids were too overwhelmed to enjoy most of the exhibits, but they did like the single seahorse we found. Not as much as running in the empty room we found, though...
We've never read this one. I will be sure to check it out! My little one has been asking to go to the aquarium often lately (we've never been to the one around here but he has been when on vacation to coastal places). Seahorses creep me out a little though, I must admit. Lol.
I love that she did a collage project to go along with this book -- great idea!!
You have some awesome places to visit around you. We LOVE this book, it's been one of my faves since Hanna was little.
Collages are so much fun and so nice because they get to do all the work.
I haven't read that Eric Carle book but I do love looking at the sea horses at the aquarium.
I'm sure with the book, the trip, and the artwork she will have some meaningful memories of seahorses.
