This idea was inspired by Filth Wizadry Lego ideas. I thought that Anna will enjoy building “a number tower” and reinforce counting by 10 and 5 in the process. I used 10 2x8 blocks and 20 2x4 blocks and wrote numbers on colored labels. However, one mistake I made is using the blocks and color labels of various colors – I think it would have gone a little better if Anna were not too distracted by sorting the blocks either by 
their own color or by the color of their labels. She was not in the least interested in putting even a tower of 10 in order (the one above was from the way I presented the activity to her). But she was happy to make an elaborate TV screens where “each screen tells us about the number” – all my attempts to tell her that the “screens are not in order” fell onto deaf ears. However, I am not losing hope – sometimes it takes her time to warm up to this kind of activity, and I might yet see those towers built when she has time to fiddle with them during her “rest time”.

Great adaptation! And, I always enjoy reading about Anna's independent spirit =)
I think we would get the same reaction from Selena with this type of activity.
My kids do the same thing. Drives me nuts sometimes.
Counting by 10s is a pretty advanced skill and this is a nice introduction. I think it's wonderful that Anna is so independent in her play. Kiddo is so rigid when it comes to order (especially when numbers are involved) that sometimes I just want to tell him to lighten up!
It makes me crazy when Crumpet goes into the land of pretend when I'm trying to teach him a new concept. I'm saying 'focus, focus' and he's on another planet. But I think they are paying attention the whole time, and it needs time to marinate. It will click when she's ready, and every little introduction adds to the pieces she needs to make it work in her head.
I really like the School House Rock - Multiplication Rock for teaching skip counting - I think all of my kids have learned that way.

This is a great idea and much cheaper than most store bought number rods! I wonder if you made multiple towers such as the first tower one lego labeled "10" and then made the next tower with two legos and only label the top "20" and so forth if that would make any impression for her. Like you said though, these things take time to rumble around their minds sometimes.

I have always enjoyed seeing what you do with Math activities.
I do think that songs go along way with things like skip counting. It makes the order so much easier to remember.
I love hearing about her imagination.
Albert Einstein once said,"Imagination is greater than knowledge."
It drives me crazy sometimes when my kids won't do my "Planned activity". It was good for you to let her do her own thing. Now you can revisit it from time to time and she'll probably join in eventually.
