We read two interesting books this week with a similar theme. The first one was Star of the Week recommended by Christie at Superheroes and Princesses. Unfortunately, Anna didn’t care much for the story, because children were mean to Stanley in the beginning, and I didn’t care at all for illustrations. We both liked the second book, The Squiggle, much better, and it would also work well with studies about China. In both books children imagine what can be done with a squiggle line and show their imagination off to their classmates.
Both of us had a good time playing “squiggles” on Magnadoodle and on paper. For some reason Anna insists that all good squiggles should be constructed from straight lines and says that curvy lines are not proper squiggles. As a result my drawings were all prickly creatures, bushes and forests. Hers were all faces – she always draws only faces or stick figures in those rare minutes when she feels like drawing. My kids get upset when kids are mean in books too, but I often use it as an opportunity to discuss why some people might be mean and what you should do if someone is mean to you. We always talk about whether the characters behaved properly or not in books that we read.

Her drawings are cute. Have you read "The Dot" by Peter H. Reynolds? It's a great book about creating confidence in art.
My boys only draw people too. Princess still insists on drawing mostly scribbles. Actually she draws something, and then covers it with scribbles. It's kind of funny.
Her drawings are cute! Selena still draws stick people, but then insists on putting clothes on them. She also draws stick animals.

Sounds like a great book, I have wanted to try squiggle drawings with Emily. I will have to check our library for the book to inspire her :0)

We ~love~ "The Squiggle" and we often squiggle while waiting at restaurants or doctor's offices. :)
These are so cute. I need to try them with JDaniel. The idea of working on them while in a restaurant is a great one.
It's interesting how they only want to draw people. That's how my kids are, anyway. I guess it's the most satisfying for them. Haven't read the book; I want to.
