StArt – Everybody Bonjours

Everybody Bonjours

My first choice for StArt project this week was painting in impressionist style following directions in the book from my home collection Discovering Great Artists. I was all prepared with the pretty good book – The Magical Garden of Claude Monet and with some suggestions on introduction to impressionists from First School. But… Anna was not in the least interested and hated the book. So I went for my second choice instead and selected another book about France that we read for our geography track – Everybody Bonjours. The May24_Painting3 illustration in this book were nice, but I wish it had more of a story. A very short poem was stretched across multiple pages, and the text was a bit too simple for Anna. There is a page in the end that talks about famous places of Paris, but that page didn’t hold her attention at all.

For the art portion I wanted to finally try a May24_Painting resist painting. Anna immediately recognized the Eiffel Tower on the page and got quite excited. I suggested using the colors of French flag for the painting – it’s harder to produce “dirty brown” by mixing blue, red and white. She gave it a good try though. Interestingly, she was disappointed when I pulled the masking tape off – she said that she liked her Eiffel Tower blue. My husband cracked me up when he came home and said, Oh, you did an Eiffel Tower! I said, I am glad it’s recognizable, and he goes, Well, I know that you are talking about France, otherwise I would think that it’s a weird letter A.

My kids like resist painting. I have to do it again soon.

I love the comment your husband made! Funny.

The A makes it a personalized Eiffel Tower for Anna. :) Great idea. I love how the colors mixed.

Great thinking there mom, when Anna didn't like the first book of choice! That is so funny the remark your husband made, Papa would have just said oh nice job or something like that.

I remember reading Everybody Bonjours and thinking it was a little light on story, too. Try Adele and Simon. I blogged about it as an Urban Picture book here: http://momandkiddo.blogspot.com/2008/05/urban-picture-books-adle-and-simon.html

Ok, I have to say this and i hope you dont take it the wrong way - I love your stART projects, because you are so honest about your little one "refusing" to do certain bits or not liking certain books (I remember you paper bag poncho that she didnt want to wear)... and yet, you always come up with something creative! Fabulous. Love the eiffel tower!

I can see why your husband could see it as a letter A, I think it came out very beautiful. I love all of the dark colors of her painting. I have done a few of those magic tape pictures as well.

I'll admit it, I thought it was an A for a moment before looking closer. :) Fun project! Sorry the books weren't as much of a success.

I laughed at the comment about muddy brown! So very true.

I LOVE the painting - the colors and everything and I too think it looks like a letter A representing the Eiffel tower, which is so appropriate for Anna.

Let me know if you find a good picture book about impressionists. My daughter just recently studied Monet in preschool and they painted outside and made blurred paintings.
