Since we were learning about Mexico this week, I got It’s Cinco de Mayo through InterLib system. It was almost late, but finally arrived exactly on May 5, and I picked it up on the way from work. It’s really a wonderful book for young children to explain the history behind Cinco de Mayo in a very simple way and also to show how Mexicans celebrate this s
pecial holiday. The illustrations are beautiful, and there is even sort of a quiz in pictures in the end to reinforce parts of the story. There is also a page with suggestions for crafts. My original plan was to make maracas, but we didn’t have a lot of time, and we went with serape out of the paper bag. It was my first attempt to make something of a paper bag, and obviously I can improve my paperbag line of clothes quite
a bit over time. Unfortunately, Anna was not terribly interested in decorating her serape. She cut part of a trim, did a few quick squiggles, stuck a few Halloween stickers (I was totally thinking about Halloween myself when we were trying out this paper bag outfit), and declared her serape ready. She also only wore it long enough to show papa – she said that she feels “trapped inside”. I still have a hunch that she might want to wear it again when she is in a more playful mood. Who knows – she might even choose to improve somewhat on decorations.

What a cute idea! I thought of getting something for Cinco de Mayo just a little too late. ;) Thanks for visiting my blog!
Very cute. I wish we had a chance to do something for Cinco de Mayo. Oh well, next year!
I had to chuckle at being "trapped" in the sarape!! Looks like your celebration was fun!
Serapes are nice, they're so warm.
I wonder how my kids would do with paper bag clothes. What few ones I get usually are relegated to holding our paper for recycling.
That, and I'd probably be tempted to just make a quick one from fabric for them to color on........ It'd probably take the same amount of time.
The serape came out so well. The book looks good too.
We didn't do much for Cinco de Mayo yesterday but did eat some Mexican food. My daughter doesn't keep her paper clothes on very long either. Last year we made a coat of many colors inspired by the biblical story of Joseph. My son completely refused to wear his.
I know the feeling... "are you SURE you're done?" :) I love the kind of projects that take little time and you don't feel bad throwing in the recycle bin when the fun wears off.
That first book sounds really interesting! My sister and I made clothes out of bags all the time growing up, but that was back before my family owned many cool toys...
I think something like that might go with The Paper Bag Princess, I just put on hold...hmmm.
What a cute idea!
I'd forgotten that I owe Tornado Boy a paper bag robot craft that we never got around to. Thanks for an inspiring post!
No need to worry about not sending the Bob books yet. The longer you wait to mail them, the less guilty I will feel for not having mailed out my giveaways yet :)
What a fun idea!
What a fun art project! I love getting books ordered through my library, I was so excited when I found out I could do it. They call my house almost once a week to let me know my books are in :)
Thank you for linking up to stART!!
It looks like an interesting book. Some of our art projects are hit or miss around here too. It turned out cute though and clever idea.
