StArt – Cinco De Mayo

Since we were learning about Mexico this week, I got It’s Cinco de Mayo through InterLib system. It was almost late, but finally arrived exactly on May 5, and I picked it up on the way from work. It’s really a wonderful book for young children to explain the history behind Cinco de Mayo in a very simple way and also to show how Mexicans celebrate this special holiday. The illustrations are beautiful, and there is even sort of a quiz in pictures in the end to reinforce parts of the story.  There is also a page with suggestions for crafts. My original plan was to make maracas, but we didn’t have a lot of time, and we went with serape out of the paper bag. It was my first attempt to make something of a paper bag, and obviously I can improve my paperbag line of clothes quite a bit  over time. Unfortunately, Anna was not terribly interested in decorating her serape. She cut part of a trim, did a few quick squiggles, stuck a few Halloween stickers (I was totally thinking about Halloween myself when we were trying out this paper bag outfit), and declared her serape ready. She also only wore it long enough to show papa – she said that she feels “trapped inside”. I still have a hunch that she might want to wear it again when she is in a more playful mood. Who knows – she might even choose to improve somewhat on decorations.
