Measure Me

May2_Measuring1
We revisited length measurements this week by playing “measure Anna” game. I took different color ribbons and used them to measure different parts of Anna’s body – neck, arm, leg, foot, etc. Then she cut the ribbon, we measured the length of the ribbon with a ruler and a measuring tape (the ruler turned out to be too small for some parts) and then we tMay2_Measuring3aped the ribbons to the big sheet of paper. Anna really enjoyed the entire process and came up with her own ideas as to what can be measured. She also predicted how the different parts of body will measure against each other and checked her predictions comparing different pieces of ribbons. And she got to use scotch tape – something that she loves dearly, but cannot use without help. Very quickly we May2_Measuring2 had what she called “Anna’s chart”. I also learned something new – for example, that the largest measurement was achieved by measuring “Anna’s big bottom” – that’s how she called that part of her body. She was quite proud of this – she was walking around telling papa that she has the biggest bottom in the whole universe. I don’t expect this joy to last for long, and we did discuss how she doesn’t want to become a round butterball mouse and therefore needs to eat more meat with veggies and less pasta with butter.

SO FUNNY!!!!!!!! My kids love to be measured.

Last year we experimented with different kinds of pasta. We used one cup of a few different shapes of pasta and lined them up and measured the line. The kids loved how one cup of one type of pasta made a short line and a different type made a really long line. Measuring is always fun!

There will come a day when she will not proclaim proudly that she has the biggest bottom! LOL!

Creative, as always!

Ha ha... love it! I love the ribbon idea...so simple and fun. We had JC measured for dance costume but we didn't get to turn it into a math lesson but we may try it now!

Measuring tapes are a favorite toy around here. I never thought of measuring the different parts of the body. We might do that soon!

That is a great idea for a project - I am going to do that with my daughter. I am so lacking in creative skills and ideas so badly need your ideas to inspire me. My daughter loves measuring tapes and scotch tape so this will be a winner - now I just need some ribbon!

Measuring tapes, rulers, yarn, all these things are so wonderful for having them understand length and width.

We just worked on that today. The visual of measuring is hands on to them. They can't get enough of it.

That is so funny!!!!

I did a similar activity with Emily when I was big and pregnant with Clara. I had her cut a piece of ribbon to estimate the size she thought it would be wrapped around my belly. She thought it was WAAAAY bigger than it really was!
