Happy Cinco de Mayo! In honor of this holiday that is quite popular in California we made this week a week of Mexico. We read Off We Go to Mexico!, which we both quite liked. The illustrations are very cheerful and, of course, focus on the positive. The journey around the country is presented as short rhymes, and there is even a smattering of Spanish words for anyone interested in learning more Spanish. In the end of the book there are some brief facts about Mexican history for older readers. Anna was fascinated to learn that Mexican ancient people also built pyramids, but not exactly same kind as ancient Egyptians.
I had some crafts in mind, but so far it wasn’t a “crafty” week. Valerie at Frugal Family Fun made a beautiful piñata sun catcher yesterday, but I am pretty sure that Anna would find anything that she couldn’t actually break apart unsatisfying. She constructed her own piñata yesterday out of Tinkertoys and pretended to break it with another Tinkertoy stick. Since my husband
has a standing guys’ night out on Wednesdays, the three of us made a Mexican dinner yesterday. Anna and I made guacamole following the recipe from another book we read – Look What Came from Mexico. Anna was even adventurous enough to eat some with a flour tortilla. My husband made my favorite beef fajitas and there was some Corona beer to chase them down. And we remembered fondly our relaxed vacation in Puerto Vallarta in 2004 and looked at the pictures of younger and fitter parents in our image library. Perhaps I should put this photo on the fridge to motivate myself to exercise.

Selena won't go anywhere near food that is remotely Mexican!
Love the picture of Anna trying her new food!
Mexican dinner! Love how you used literature to build your meal!
You've really been everywhere! Sorry to make you crave tortillas - I thought of Anna, and her fun measuring revelation, as I was spreading the butter :)
I LOVE Mexican food. Yum.
That is a great picture of you. I love the red pants.
We made black bean salsa and Mexican brownies but the last few days have been SO busy that I didn't even take pictures or consider blogging about them.
We have read the Spanish version of that book. It really is a great overview of the Mexican culture. We, of course, eat Mexican food ever other day but I love fajitas too!
I love that Anna made and destroyed her own pinata! I think Johnny would adore her if he knew her...
I love your geography learning journeys! I can't wait to start something like this with A.
I know what you mean about being motivated by old pics.. I was thinking of doing the same thing with my wedding pics to motivate myself to get fit haha
Yum guacamole, and yum to fajitas. I guess since I live in Texas I just think everyone eats Mexican food at least once a week in some form or another. It's a little weird for me to think of them not.
I've been to some of the Aztec pyramids and they're fun to explore.
And, love the picture of you that you included, very cute. Forget hanging it up to motivate you, hang it up because it's a good picture.
Sounds like a super fun day. I am continually amazed at all you get done. We loved Off We Go to Mexico! as well. Did you know she has a whole series of books from the places she has visited. They are all great companions for Geography. Our favorite is We All Went On Safari
